Infection Control in Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry

The Infection Control in Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry is really important to get a positive outcome of the therapy. Infection Control is carried preventing the contamination of the operative field (Asepsis) and removing the bacteria that are sustaining the pathosis (Cleaning). Asepsis and Cleaning are both important for the outcome of the treatment. One of the most important steps to get a good Asepsis is the isolation of the operative field using the rubber dam.

The usage of dental dam is still considered an essential step in a rational and predictable endodontic and/or conservative procedure. All clinical procedures must follow reliable and predictable operative protocols based on evidence-based theory, and operative field isolation is no exception. Infection Control in Endodontics, is often associated to the Cleaning during the treatment. Cleaning is an important stage of the Endodontic treatment but the Asepsis and it’s at least as important as the Cleaning. A good Asepsis increases the efficiency of the Cleaning in Endodontics and prevents an early failure due to microleakage in Restorative Dentistry, never forgetting even that prevents transmission of virus as the coronavirus through aerosols formed during medical procedures. Cleaning is a key part of successful root canal treatment: the debridement of all vital or necrotic tissue, microorganisms, and their products from the root canal system is essential to prevent the reinfection and to get a positive outcome of the therapy: in fact in endodontic failures, microbes are always present in the root canal system. The activation of irrigating solutions using sonic and ultrasonic dedicated devices, improves the cleaning even in irregular and oval canal cross-sections, accessory canals, isthmuses, anastomoses, curves and apical delta.

Aim of the lecture is to go deep in protocols useful to get a proper Infection Control during Endodontic and Restorative Dentistry (importance of mouthrinse, importance of rubber dam application, importance of activation of irrigating solution during the Cleaning, importance of the coronal seal), protocols focused on a good management of the treatment even in complex cases.
